RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
